To preserve the beauty and longevity of your shoes, each type of leather requires special attention.
1. For Smooth Leather (Classic Leather)
Smooth leather is durable but requires conditioning to remain supple and elegant.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove dust. For stains, use a suitable glycerin soap or cleansing milk.
- Hydration: Regularly apply a nourishing cream or lotion of the same color (or colorless) with a clean cloth, using circular motions. This is the most important step to prevent cracking.
- Protection & Shine: After moisturizing, apply a thin layer of shoe polish. Let it dry for a few minutes, then buff vigorously with a soft brush to create a shine and a protective barrier.
2. For Nubuck (Velvety and sanded appearance)
Nubuck is a delicate leather that is sensitive to water and oil. It is mainly dry-cleaned.
- Dry brushing: This is basic maintenance. Use a special nubuck brush (crepe or brass) to straighten the fibers and remove surface dirt. Always brush gently in the same direction.
- Spot cleaning: Use a nubuck eraser for dried-on stains. For tougher stains, a specialized shampoo applied with a damp brush can be used with caution. Allow to air dry, away from any heat source.
- Waterproofing: This is a crucial step. Protect your shoes with a waterproofing spray specifically for nubuck before first use and repeat the process regularly.
3. For Suede (or Suede, velvety and fibrous appearance)
Similar to nubuck, suede is even more sensitive to water. Brushing and protection are essential.
- Main interview: Brushing is essential. Use a crepe or brass brush to clean, revive the fibers, and remove accumulated dust.
- Stubborn stains: Sommières earth is very effective on greasy stains. Sprinkle on, leave for several hours, then brush off. A suede eraser can also be used for light marks.
- Protection: As with nubuck, a waterproofing spray is essential to protect it from water and stains.
Golden tip: For nubuck and suede, always avoid direct contact with water and only use Never shoe polish or greasy cream, which would destroy their velvety appearance.
